and the purpose is companionship and help on their spiritual path, rather than sexual enjoyment. The married relationship is summed up in the phrase ‘one soul in two bodies’, so being faithful to a husband or wife is central to Sikh life. In a marriage a couple can regulate their sex life. The Sikh sacred text, the Guru Granth Sahib, is the highest authority in Sikhism. However, there are parts of the Guru Granth Sahib that have been interpreted to mean that homosexuality is wrong. There are five vices outlined in the Guru Granth Sahib that are to be avoided by Sikhs. They are Pride (a’Hankar), Anger (Kr’odh), Greed (Lob’H), Attachment (Mo’H), and Lust (K’haam).
A male Sikh should consider all females older than him as his mother, equal in age to him as a sister, and younger than him as a daughter. This has led to a belief among many Sikhs that there are no gay or lesbian Sikhs. This belief can cause much distress amongst young Sikhs who find themselves attracted to members of the same sex. Those Sikhs who are supportive of homosexuality believe that there is nothing unnatural about homosexuality and that it is perfectly normal for a minority of adults. They believe that the concept of family is not restricted to a man and a woman and their biological children, but can come in many other forms including same-sex couples. This is especially true in societies that are more tolerant of homosexuality. Most Sikhs however do not strongly disapprove of homosexuality. Most Gurdwaras will happily conduct the marriage ceremony, called the Anand Karaj in the Sikh manner between two Sikh partners from different racial groups.Race, caste and ethnicity can play no part in considerations of any kind in the Sikh faith. However, when dealing with the Punjabi culture you will find that this answer will not be found acceptable; most Punjabi will argue that Sikhi says "no" to inter racial marriages.Sikhism isn't just a religion, it is a way of life, and for someone to live that life, they have the right to select their own morals and ethical values.
