Over the last week I’ve been upgrading our v Center servers from version 5.5 to the most recent 5.5 Update 3b version and have ran into a small hiccup.
However, after many hours of searching, I cannot find definite information on how to update these systems.
These are production servers running production VMs and I do not have the resources to test my exact environment on separate hardware so it is important that I understand exactly what needs to be done before updating.
You will need to re-add the host to your infrastructure and to your resource pools so take notes.
Thanks to VMware as they had published KB 2134141 with a workaround.
If you see this post or the KB article prior to upgrading from v Center 5.5 to v Center 5.5 Update 3b then simply perform the following steps: Just make sure all the v Center server services are running and that’s it, a pretty quick and easy fix.
Attempting to start the VMare Virtual Center service gave me: We also found that when we attempted to start VPXD manually from a command prompt, that we received this error: “The procedure entry point ? could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program Files\VMare\Infrastructure\Virtual Center Server\vpxd.exe” Further investigation brought us to the following KB Article. Revert to the previous state by reverting the snapshot you took before upgrading & restoring the DB to the backup you took.

Then performing the steps above to prevent the issue from occurring.
